The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standardised proficiency test for non-native English language speakers. It was established in 1989.
IELTS is accepted by most Australian, Canadian, British and New Zealand academic institutions, by over 3,000 academic institutions in the United States (including the CGFNS) and by various professional organisations across the world. Thus, the IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for study, work and migration in those countries.
The IELTS tests basic English-language skills, including listening, reading, writing and speaking. The Certification is important for professional registration purposes (such as the CGFNS) and work in many countries. The relevant components of the IELTS test in this regard will be for Academic or General Training purposes. While the IELTS Academic Test is suitable for entry to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and also for professional registration purposes, the IELTS General Training Test is suitable for those applying to train or study at below degree level, as well as those wishing to migrate to many countries where English is the native or first language, especially in the West. The latter test focuses on an ability to use the language in situations of basic survival skills, especially in broad social and workplace contexts.
